Before I worked in a law office, I was a bicycle messenger in downton Houston, Texas. It was a great experience, and I still ride a bicycle as my main mode of transportation. A good resource for bicycle messengers is the International Federation of Bicycle Messenger Associations.
If you are concerned about the environment, consider riding a bike for short (or even long) commutes. If you don't give a damm about the environment, ride a bike because of all of the many other benifits, such as your health and freedom.
